"I have finished a couple of sessions with Asha. When I started, I wasn’t sure what to expect — but the art activities helped me understand my patterns and where they come from. That awareness has been key in my healing journey. Working with colors also helps me feel calmer and more relaxed.”

Common Curiosities

WHAT EXACTLY IS ART THERAPY ?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy where we combine creative process like drawing, coloring, doodling, collaging with psychology to enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It's not about creating beautiful pieces of Art. It's about using art materials to explore your feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, and manage behavior and addictions. A qualified art therapist guides you to find meaning and connection through your creations.

DO I NEED ART SKILLS?

Not at all. You don’t need to know how to draw or paint to benefit from art therapy. These sessions are about emotional expression and self-awareness through creative process, not about artistic ability. It’s a space to explore what’s inside you — with colors, shapes, and movement — at your own pace.

HOW LONG IS EACH SESSION?

Each online art therapy session is about 60 minutes. The session begins with a short check-in, followed by a guided art-based activity and reflection. You’ll have enough time to explore, express, and process gently.

ARE THE SESSIONS ONLINE ?

Yes. All art therapy sessions are conducted online through a secure video platform, so you can join from the comfort of your home or any quiet space. All you need is a stable internet connection and your art materials close by.

WHAT ISSUES CAN ART THERAPY HELP WITH?

Art therapy is effective for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Life transitions (career change, divorce, empty nest)

  • Relationship issues

  • Creative blocks

  • A general desire for greater self-understanding and personal growth.

I AM ALREADY TALKING TO A PSYCHOLOGIST. WHY WOULD I NEED ART THERAPY?

Art therapy can be a wonderful complement to traditional talk therapy. Sometimes, words are not enough to access deeper, non-verbal parts of our brain where trauma and core memories are stored. The creative process can unlock these areas, providing new insights that can then be processed verbally with your primary therapist.

Furthermore, the very act of making art is a powerful, body-based regulation tool. Engaging in creative work can calm the nervous system by lowering cortisol levels (the body's primary stress hormone) and promoting a state of "flow," similar to meditation. A 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found that just 45 minutes of creative activity significantly reduced cortisol levels in participants, regardless of their artistic experience (Kaimal, Ray, & Muniz, 2016). This makes art-making not just an exploratory tool, but also an immediate and accessible coping strategy for managing anxiety and stress in daily life.

IS ART THERAPY CONFIDENTIAL?

Yes. Like all forms of therapy, your sessions and the art you create are confidential. There are legal and ethical limits to confidentiality, which primarily involve risk of harm to yourself or others, which we will discuss in detail during our first session.

CAN I START WITH JUST ONE SESSION?

Yes, of course. You can begin with a single session to see how the process feels for you. Many people find even one session brings a sense of calm and insight — and choose to continue once they experience the difference.

WHAT ARE THE ART SUPPLIES NEEDED?

You don’t need anything fancy — just simple, easily available materials. You can start with:

  • A drawing or sketchbook (A4 size works well)

  • Color pencils, crayons, or oil pastels

  • A few basic paints (watercolors or acrylics) and a brush

If you have more, you’re welcome to use them — but the focus is never on what you create, it’s on what the process reveals.
